Rain postpones two Bay Rivers football games for Friday
York's junior varsity and varsity football games this week have been postponed. The JV game will be Saturday morning, and the varsity game will be Monday night. You can read more HERE.
Q & A with varsity starting junior QB Alex Johnston
1. How long have you been playing football?
I've been playing football since the fifth grade.
2. Have you played for York since your freshman season?
Yes, I've played for York all through high school.
3. When did you become a starter for York?
Well, before my first game of my freshman year, our starting quarterback got injured, so I had to take over and start that game. Also last year our quarterback was injured often, so I started around seven games. But this season is my first season as the team's true starter.
4. How much more confident are you this season than previous seasons, since you have more experience?
I'm a lot more confident than I was freshman and sophomore years, simply because everyone now has a better feel for the scheme we are trying to run, and we have had an opportunity to get with one another.
5. What changes in the program have you noticed over the years?
Well, a big change I've noticed this season is how intense and hyped everyone is before the games. Last season we were a very cool, calm team that just went out and handled our business. But this year, it's just a little bit different.
6. Do you believe in leading by example or with your voice?
Personally, I'm a rather quiet guy on the field, and I prefer to just lead by example, because there just isn't a need for too much talking.
7. How do you think the team has performed so far this season?
I would say we have performed alright through the first three games, but much, much lower than our potential is. In my mind, no other team has won the game against us this year, we have just lost them with little mistakes here and there.
8. What are your expectations for the rest of this season?
Our expectations are to win out the rest of the regular season and take the district title; From there, it's on to week 14.
9. Which teams do you look forward to playing?
Well we try to look at every team the same, but teams I look forward to are teams that beat us last year, such as Bruton, Smithfield, and Lafayette because it gives us a chance to show what we should've last year.
10. Besides football, do you play any other sports or have any hobbies?
I usually play rec basketball and soccer during the offseason, to get my mind away from football for a little bit.
11. Do you have any college plans?
No, not currently, I haven't heard from any coaches or scouts.
12. What do you think the younger players on the team think of the football program so far?
I think they are realizing how hard the program works throughout the year and are starting to understand the kind of commitment they are going to have to make in order to be successful.
