11/05 Update

I've been slow with posting this week, but here goes:

-Raiders football beat Bethel 47-28 on Saturday to move one win away from a playoff berth.  Dave Johnson's story has the details, but Cardon Johnson broke 1000 yards on the season by rushing for 3 touchdowns and 220 yards.  Eric Poindexter and Albert Webb each had two interceptions; one of Poindexter's was an 80-yard pick-6.

PD XC Championships

The Peninsula District Championship meet was held yesterday at an extremely wet and muddy Newport News Park.  Bethel's William Brown won the individual boys race (16:29) for the 2nd year in a row and Gloucester won the boys team championship for the 4th time in the past 5 years.  Gloucester's Elisabeth Drake won the girls race in the slowest winning time (20:51) in more than a decade, while Kecoughtan won the girls team championship to break Gloucester's streak of 6 in a row.  With their boys championship yesterday, Gloucester now has 8 PD titles to their credit, 3rd on the all-time list behind Denbigh and Menchville.  Scarily, Gloucester's top 5 runners are all juniors, so they quickly become the favorite for the 2011 season.  Kecoughtan's team title was its first girls championship ever.

In the boys race, Menchville's Graham Wilson took second and Warwick's Desmond Fogg took 4th to split up Gloucester's Speray twins Kevin (3rd) and Eric (5th).   Brown led from start to finish, with Wilson making a strong push at the end but falling a bit short.  Kecoughtan, Bethel, and Warwick finshed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the team race yesterday; the top 4 teams and 15 individuals advance to next week's Eastern Region Championship at Bell's Mill Park in Chesapeake.

In the girls race, Bethel's Tori Lewis-Johnson took 2nd and Gloucester's Morganne Roundy took 3rd.  The Kecoughtan girls swept spots 4-7, led by Victoria Worrall and Ariel Smith.  Gloucester, Bethel, and Menchville advance along with Kecoughtan to the Eastern Region meet, along with the top 15 individuals.  This was one of the weakest girls fields in recent memory, but that takes nothing away from Kecoughtan's absolute domination.  Kecoughtan had the 2nd-lowest (aka best) winning score since 2000 with their 33-point mark.

Quotes from winning individuals, teams, and coaches will hopefully come by the end of the weekend.

-Warwick boys basketball won its final two regular season games in the Boo Williams Fall League, defeating York 54-47 and Green Run 56-45.  The boys finished 2nd in the East Division behind defending AAA state champion Norcom.  Warwick faces Green Run again at 7:15pm  on Wednesday the 27th in the first round of the playoffs.  If Warwick wins, they will face either Woodside or Nansemond River at 8:15pm.  Semifinals and finals are held on Thursday the 28th.  The JV team is seeded 5th in the playoffs and faces 4th-seeded Norview in a 6:30 play-in game on Wednesday the 27th.

10/16 Update

-Behind 12 saves by Robin Roston and 4 goals from Elizabeth Hubbard, Warwick's field hockey team beat Phoebus 5-1 on Friday, taking their record to 4-10, 2-5 PD.  The JV team earned a 2-0 victory.

-Members of the cross country teams competed in the Milestat.com Invitational in Richmond on Saturday.  Desmond Fogg led the Raiders with his 7th place finish in the Varsity B race.  Fogg ran 16:52 to match his best time of the year.  Javon Walker also had a great race, running 17:59.

-The Raiders football team defeated Heritage in our homecoming game on a beautiful afternoon at Todd Stadium.   A 29-yard TD pass from Donnell Staton to Charles Davis put the Raiders up early.  28 points were scored in the 2nd quarter to put the Raiders ahead 35-0 at the half.  David Smith, who ran 2nd leg on the District-champion 4x800m relay team last outdoor track season, took a carry 79 yards from the score.  Staton then connected with Devon Asbury for a 15-yard touchdown pass.  Cardon Johnson scored his first of two touchdowns on a 23-yard run and Staton threw his third TD pass of the afternoon (a 62-yard pass to Eric Poindexter) to close out the half.  In the second half, Johnson went 1 yard for his second score.  The Raiders finished with 106 yards through the air and 264 yards on the ground on 31 carries.  Warwick moves to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the PD.  Next up is an "away" game against Denbigh on Friday night at Todd Stadium.

10/14 Update

-Despite a goal from Caitlin Shipman and 21 saves by goalie Robin Roston, the Raiders field hockey girls fell to Bethel 2-1 on Monday.  The Raiders are now 3-10 overall and 1-5 in the PD.

-Both the girls and boys cross country teams lost to Kecoughtan on Wednesday.  The boys lost 22-35, moving to 1-3 on the year.  Desmond Fogg won his third race of the year, running a personal-best 16:52.  This is the fastest time by a Warwick runner since the 2003 season.  Myles Spivey, Javon Walker, Deshonte Parker, Darius Williams, Dallas Bevins, Kenny Hancock, Luke Whitesides, Wade Hodson, Desmond Green, and Jack Tartala all ran personal bests for the Raiders.  The girls lost 19-40, moving to 0-4 on the year.  Eliza Lavery led the Raiders with her 3rd place finish, while Olivia Barnes, Ty Daniels, Anna Wahlstrom, and Amanda Seiken all PRed on the Gosnold's Hope Park course.

10/07 Update

-Despite 12 saves by Robin Roston, Warwick lost 4-0 to the District-leading Denbigh Patriots in field hockey on Monday.

-In girls volleyball, the Raiders lost a close one to Menchville on Monday (20-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17, 15-13) and also lost to Woodside, who is undefeated in District play, on Tuesday (18-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-20).

-The boys volleyball team also lost to Woodside, who is undefeated in District play and has only one loss on the season, on Tuesday (25-7, 25-22, 25-23).

-The cross country meet against Menchville is cancelled for good and will not be made up.  Dual meets during the regular season do not affect the District championship.

-The cross country teams raced PD favorite Gloucester at home yesterday.  Desmond Fogg won his second race of the year in a time of 17:30, but Gloucester took the next 5 spots to win 20-41.  Olivia Abbott led the Raiders girls with a 3rd place finish, but the Gloucester ladies won 21-40.
