Warwick Girls over Northumberland 70-28, 55-31

Due to last weekend's snow, Warwick ended up playing 2 games against host Northumberland on day one of the Northumberland Christmas Tournament on Wednesday.  The Lady Raiders (6-2, 4-2 PD) won both games.  LaQuanda Younger (20.6ppg) scored 20 and 4 points in the two games.  Tenisha Williams had a big double-double with 29 points and 10 boards in the 70-28 win; Doneisha Eley led Warwick scorers with 11 points in the 55-31 victory.

Menchville 45, Warwick 44

A 23-point 4th quarter propelled Menchville to a one-point win over Warwick at the Hampton University Convocation Center on Thursday night in the Ronald Curry Christmas Classic.  The Raiders (3-6, 1-5 PD) led 32-22 heading into the final stanza but were outscored by 11 in those last 8 minutes.  Breven Lyons (15.8ppg) and Devon Asbury had 12 points apiece for the Raiders and Jelani Saunders chipped in 6.  Doryan Soto scored 5 and Donnell Staton, LJ Carney, and Josh Butler had 3 each.  Warwick shot 4 of 19 (3 of 8 in the first quarter, 1 of 11 in the second) in the first half and trailed 17-16 going into the locker room, but made 7 of 10 from the field in the 3rd quarter to open a 10-point lead.  Menchville had the ball for what seemed like an eternity in the 4th quarter and held the Raiders to 12 points on 4 of 9 shooting.  The Raiders shot 39.4% from the field and only 47.6% (10 of 21) from the free-throw line.

The Raiders' next game is Friday, 12/31, at 2:30pm at the Convocation Center against the loser of Northeastern of N.C. and W.T. Woodson.

12/29 Basketball Update

-The Raiders (3-5, 1-5 PD) defeated Atlantic Shores 60-51 behind 24 points from Breven Lyons to win their first round game at the Ronald Curry Christmas Classic.  The Raiders play at 7pm Thursday against either Menchville or Freedom.  The Daily Press story about today's game is here.  Lyons is now averaging 16.3 ppg; he was the 7th highest scorer in the PD heading into today's game.

-LaQuanda Younger's 23.5 ppg for the Lady Raiders (4-2, 4-2 PD) are the most in the District right now.

Snow Update Part 2

-The girls basketball games at the Northumberland Christmas Tournament have been rescheduled.  Warwick now plays Lancaster at 4pm on Wednesday and Northumberland at 7:30pm on Wednesday...yes, 2 games in one day.  The girls play King and Queen Central at 4pm on Thursday.

-The Ronald Curry Christmas Classic has been bumped back 2 days because of snow.  Warwick now plays Atlantic Shores at 10am on Wednesday.  If the Raiders win, they face the winner of the Menchville-Freedom game at 7pm on Thursday; if they lose, they face the loser of the Menchville-Freedom game at 10am on Thursday.  I'd like to see a Warwick-Menchville rematch before their District meeting on January 11th.  The schedule for Friday has not yet been determined, but some games will be held at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in order to get the kids home for New Year's Eve festivities.

12/22 Winter Sports Update

-The boys basketball team lost 53-47 to Denbigh on Tuesday to drop to 2-5, 1-5 PD.  Next up is a first-round date with Atlantic Shores at 10am on 12/27 at the Hampton University Convocation Center.  Thankfully, Duke sophomore guard Andre Dawkins graduated from Atlantic Shores last year.  If the Raiders win, they'll play at 7pm on 12/28; if they lose, they'll play at 10am on 12/28.  The PD game against Heritage that was snowed out has been rescheduled for 01/05.

-The girls basketball team beat Denbigh 56-32 behind 27 points from LaQuanda Younger; 21 of Younger's points came on 3-pointers.  The Raiders (4-2, 4-2 PD) took a 28-10 halftime lead and never looked back.  The Raiders don't have another PD game until 01/04 against Bethel; they come back and play the next night in a make-up game against Heritage.  The girls team is playing in the Northumberland Christmas Tournament.  Their first game is 12/28 against Lancaster at 4pm and the second game is 12/29 against Northumberland at 6pm.

-The Raiders indoor track teams have had a great deal of success in the early season.  The girls are led by senior Lerice Bynum and freshmen Lacey Elliot and Ryneisha Alston.  Bynum has cleared 5 feet in the high jump and already qualified for the Eastern Region Championships.  Elliot and Alston lead a strong group of underclassmen for the Raiders; the middle school track program in Newport News is definitely helping the high school teams out.

On the boys side, a core cross country group that took 4th at Districts has been joined by a few football players and newcomers to form the best Warwick team since the 02-03 season.  Junior Javon Walker has the PD's top time in the 1000m and also runs a leg on the District-leading 4x800m relay team along with Desmond Fogg, Darius Williams, and Myles Spivey.  Marquis Hill's 20-02.50 foot mark in the long jump is leading the District and Eric Poindexter has qualified for the Eastern Region Championships with his 6-foot clearance in the high jump.  The boys have won multiple medals in the season's first two invitationals and won the first regular season meet convincingly on Monday without many of their top athletes.

-If any swimmers or wrestlers have updates, please let me know in a message and then I'll be in touch.

12/19 Basketball Update

-Despite 24 points from Breven Lyons (15ppg) and 14 from LJ Carney, the Warwick boys (2-4, 1-4 PD) lost to Gloucester 61-55 on Tuesday night.  The Friday game against Heritage was postponed due to snow.

-The Warwick girls beat Gloucester 57-18 on Tuesday behind 14 points from LaQuanda Younger (22.8ppg).  A nice article by Dave Johnson on Younger can be found here.

12/11 Basketball Update

-LaQuanda Younger's 37 points put her over 1000 for her career (as a junior), but the Lady Raiders (2-2, 2-2 PD) lost to Hampton 68-67 at home on Friday.  Younger is averaging 25ppg this season.

-Josh Butler led the Raiders with 15 points against Hampton on Friday night as the Raiders lost 74-45.  David Smith and Melvin Hazleton each added 6 for Warwick, who dropped to 2-3, 1-3 PD.
