Boys Basketball Preview

Coach Ben Moore's boys take to the hardwood against Menchville in their 1st regular season game on Wednesday night.  The Raiders tied for 5th in the PD last year with their 10-12, 9-9 record.  The Daily Press predicts a 7th place finish for the Raiders this year, but I have to agree with Coach Moore in putting the Raiders at 4th in the District behind Phoebus, Bethel, and Hampton.

The "Smooth Operator", Breven Lyons, is back for Coach Moore after a successful spring and fall which included a 40-point effort in a scrimmage just last week.  Coach describes his senior point guard as the smallest guy with the biggest heart; anyone who has been around a Moore-coached team knows that they won't be lacking in heart and effort.

Senior forwards Jelani Saunders and Devon Asbury anchor the frontcourt for the Raiders.  Coach Moore says senior center Melvin Hazleton has developed greatly in the past year.  Senior G/F Donnell Staton and junior G/F Cameron Riggsbee are other notables for the Raiders, along with senior "garbage man" Doryan Soto and senior LJ Carney.

Coach Moore is excited about the chemistry and leadership on this year's team, as well as their quickness and defensive ability.  The offense seems to be the big question mark for the Raiders, especially with shooting guard Jonquay Byrd out until 2nd semester begins.  Best of luck to Coach Moore and his guys this season!
