PD XC Championships

The Peninsula District Championship meet was held yesterday at an extremely wet and muddy Newport News Park.  Bethel's William Brown won the individual boys race (16:29) for the 2nd year in a row and Gloucester won the boys team championship for the 4th time in the past 5 years.  Gloucester's Elisabeth Drake won the girls race in the slowest winning time (20:51) in more than a decade, while Kecoughtan won the girls team championship to break Gloucester's streak of 6 in a row.  With their boys championship yesterday, Gloucester now has 8 PD titles to their credit, 3rd on the all-time list behind Denbigh and Menchville.  Scarily, Gloucester's top 5 runners are all juniors, so they quickly become the favorite for the 2011 season.  Kecoughtan's team title was its first girls championship ever.

In the boys race, Menchville's Graham Wilson took second and Warwick's Desmond Fogg took 4th to split up Gloucester's Speray twins Kevin (3rd) and Eric (5th).   Brown led from start to finish, with Wilson making a strong push at the end but falling a bit short.  Kecoughtan, Bethel, and Warwick finshed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the team race yesterday; the top 4 teams and 15 individuals advance to next week's Eastern Region Championship at Bell's Mill Park in Chesapeake.

In the girls race, Bethel's Tori Lewis-Johnson took 2nd and Gloucester's Morganne Roundy took 3rd.  The Kecoughtan girls swept spots 4-7, led by Victoria Worrall and Ariel Smith.  Gloucester, Bethel, and Menchville advance along with Kecoughtan to the Eastern Region meet, along with the top 15 individuals.  This was one of the weakest girls fields in recent memory, but that takes nothing away from Kecoughtan's absolute domination.  Kecoughtan had the 2nd-lowest (aka best) winning score since 2000 with their 33-point mark.

Quotes from winning individuals, teams, and coaches will hopefully come by the end of the weekend.

Cardon Johnson

The Daily Press' Dave Johnson did a nice article on Cardon Johnson today that can be found here.

Johnson points out that Johnson will become Warwick's first 1000-yard rusher since Lonnie Starks in 2002 if he gains 109 yards total in his last 2 games.  For the new-school Warwick fans out there, Lonnie was one of the best all-around athletes to ever come through Warwick.  Starks was a 6'6" high-jumper who only stood about 5'9".  Lonnie won the indoor and outdoor Peninsula District championship in the high jump his senior year and took 3rd at the VHSL AAA state indoor meet that year as well.  Lonnie also had a few 21+ feet long jumps to his credit.

Warwick 42, Denbigh 20

22 carries, 278 yards, 4TDs.  Not a bad night for sophomore running back Cardon Johnson.  On a brisk fall night at a fairly empty Todd Stadium, Johnson put on quite a show with his touchdown runs of 8, 9, 2, and 61 yards.  When Johnson had over 100 yards with 4 minutes left in the 1st quarter, the stage was set for a special night on the field.  Whenit was over, Warwick (4-4, 4-3 PD) had trounced Denbigh 44-20.  Johnson now has 12 touchdowns and 891 yards on the year.
