Due to today's match being cancelled because of rain, the 2010 Peninsula District golf regular season is over. The Raiders team finished in 7th place overall. Congrats to the team on their season!
Here's the latest I have from Warwick's administration regarding today's games and practices:
-Cheerleading, JV/Varsity football, and girls volleyball will practice as scheduled.
-No JV/Varsity field hockey games or practice.
-No XC meet. Practice will still be held.
-No boys volleyball practice.
If I hear any more updates, to include rescheduled dates for field hockey and XC, I'll put them up.
-The football team lost to Woodside 38-21 on Friday night to drop to 1-3, 1-2 PD, on the season. Despite touchdown passes of 58 and 18 yards from Donnell Staton to Eric Poindexter, the Raiders were unable to match the Wolverines in the 4th quarter. The Raiders face Hampton at Todd Stadium this Friday night and hope to replicate their historic win from last year.
-The Raiders XC teams competed in the Chesapeake Invitational on Saturday on the Eastern Region Championships course. Junior Desmond Fogg ran a personal-best 17:11 to take 14th in the Varsity A race. Myles Spivey, Javon Walker, Deshonte Parker, and Darius Williams joined Fogg to take 10th place in the team standings. Eliza Lavery finished 16th in leading the ladies to an 8th place finish overall. Olivia Abbott, Tynequia Daniels, Anna Wahlstrom, and Laura Curran made up the rest of the top 5.
-In the 1st results we've seen from girls volleyball, Warwick defeated Heritage tonight 25-18, 25-20, 25-17, to move to 2-1 in Peninsula District competition. Charmayne Clark had 6 kills, 5 blocks, and 8 service points for the Raiders.
-In boys volleyball, Heritage defeated Warwick 25-16, 25-20, 22-25, 25-14.
-Robin Roston had 22 saves in the field hockey team's 3-0 loss to Hampton. The loss drops the Raiders to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in the PD.
-In the 8th PD golf match of the year, the Raiders recorded their best finish yet, shooting a team score of 364 to take 5th place. Warwick is still in 7th place overall with one match remaining, but is knocking on the door to take over 6th place from Bethel.
-Eliza Lavery won her second straight dual meet, but the girls cross country team lost to Bethel today 21-34. The boys team also lost (25-31), but had great races from Desmond Fogg, who took second overall, and Deshonte Parker, who ran a personal-best time on the tough Mariner's Museum course. The girls are 0-2 on the season and the boys are 1-1. Next up is Saturday's Chesapeake Invitational at Bells Mill Park. The cross country teams are also having car washes this Friday (24 September) and next Friday (01 October) at the Hardee's at Jefferson and Dresden from 3-6.
Field Hockey- The Warwick girls are now 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the Peninsula District. The Raiders made up for a 3-1 loss to Bruton by beating PD rival Woodside 3-2 on Tuesday in a game decided by penalty strokes. Tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, Elizabeth Hubbard and Kelly Carson scored penalty strokes to give the Raiders the edge. Goalie Robin Roston made 22 saves in the game. On Friday, the ladies beat Eastern Region foe Deep Creek 4-0 and were led by 2 goals from Anne Marie Lindemann. The JV team beat Deep Creek 5-0 and lost to Woodside 3-2.
Golf- The Raiders are still in 7th place in the PD after finishing 7th in the 7th PD match on Wednesday.
Boys and Girls Volleyball- I have yet to see any results from Warwick in the paper or heard anything from coaches. With more PD games in the coming weeks, I should be able to make it out to one or more. In the meantime, if there is anyone who wants to send updates/scores/stats, that would be great.
Boys and Girls Cross Country- The Raiders XC teams competed at the William & Mary Invitational on Saturday. Junior Desmond Fogg's 17:34 was good enough for 12th place in the boys varsity B race and led the Raiders to an 11th place team finish. Myles Spivey, Javon Walker, Deshonte Parker, and Wade Hodson made up the rest of the top 5 scorers for Warwick. The girls were led by a 23rd place finish by sophomore Eliza Lavery.
Other than the 68 yard return of a blocked kick for a touchdown by #11 Dominique Diggs, it was a long night for Raiders fans at Darling Stadium. Phoebus running back Tyree Lee rushed 13 times for 251 yards (8 for 213) in the first half, and scored on touchdown runs of 55 and 64 yards. Backup quarterback Jordan Roby entered the game in the second quarter for Phoebus after an apparent injury to Eric Enderson. The Phantoms didn't miss a beat, as Roby threw for 2 touchdowns and looked more comfortable in the pocket than Enderson did.
Lee's 55 yard touchdown run gave Phoebus a lead early in the 1st quarter. With Warwick pinned deep in their own territory in the 2nd quarter, Phoebus had a quick 13 yard pick-6 followed by a safety when the ball was snapped over Warwick punter Patou Griggs' head and out of the endzone. With Phoebus up 15-0, an Eric Enderson field goal attempt was blocked and returned by Diggs. After the 2-point conversion was called back for an extremely questionable procedure penalty on Warwick, the ensuing extra point attempt was blocked by the Phantoms. After Lee's second touchdown run and a 53 yard TD pass from Roby to Daquan Romero, Phoebus took a 28-6 lead into halftime. The 3rd quarter saw a touchdown run of 13 yards and a TD pass of 12 yards, and the Phantoms closed out the scoring with a 1 yard touchdown run late in the 4th quarter.
Warwick couldn't get the ground game or air attack going, as quarterback Donnell Staton was under pressure most of the evening. Backup quarterback Josh Butler showed some speed and promise, but the Phantom defense shut Warwick's offense down. Next up for the Raiders is a 7pm game against Woodside on Friday night at Todd Stadium.
Congrats to the JV team for their 14-7 victory over Menchville on Monday. They are 1-0 on the season. Chris Owens was named the player of the game.
The boys and girls XC teams kicked off their season at the 23rd annual Newport News Invitational on Saturday at Newport News Park. Junior Desmond Fogg led the 14 boys that competed for the Raiders; Fogg covered the 3.1 mile (5000m) course in 17:40, which was a huge personal best. Fogg's time was good enough for 12th place in the Varsity Boys B race. Senior Myles Spivey also had a strong race and finished in a personal-best time of 18:23.
The girls team was led by sophomore Eliza Lavery, whose time of 22:34 put her in 3rd place in the Girls Junior Varsity race. 8th-grader Morgan Barnes finished 6th in her first race for the Raiders. The girls JV team finished 3rd overall; sophomores Anna Wahlstrom, Ty Daniels, and Amanda Seiken, and 8th-grader Natalie Lavery made up the rest of the team.
The Raiders are back in action against Phoebus at Gosnold's Hope Park on Wednesday and at the William & Mary Invitational at Eastern State on Saturday.
