Four Walsingham Academy Lower School Cross Country runners have achieved a national ranking and far surpassed their initial goals. 6th graders Jessica Link, Isabella Simmons and Fernando MacFarlane, and 7th grader Christine McBeath are nationally ranked 6th, 13th, 19th and 12th respectfully.
“My oldest brother Adam inspired me to run. He has been on the Walsingham Varsity Cross Country team since 8th grade,” explained Link. Walsingham's Middle School team is quickly gaining recognition as the starting point for student runners with natural speed and endurance. The team slogan “pain is temporary, quitting lasts forever” explains how challenging cross country running can be and the level of determination needed to succeed.
While Link and McBeath raced locally before joining the Walsingham team, Simmons and MacFarlane initially joined the team looking for a fun time with friends. As they began racing, the fun remained while the desire kicked in. “With practice and hard work you can always be better and I will be better,” said Simmons. Reaching a national ranking came as a surprise to the young runners but all are Academic Honor Students and are familiar with success. “It made me want to be number one!”, Link said after learning of her national ranking.
Participating in the Walsingham Invitational Meet and regular “mud run” practices, give all runners incentive to continue their course of success. For McBeath that means getting “in the high 19's for a 5K by the end of the season!”
Walsingham JV Cross Country Runners had a great day at the 2010 Norfolk Academy Cross Country Championship on November 3rd
Christine MacBeath and Fernando MacFarfane once again led the way finishing first and fifth respectively in the girls and boys races. Fernando ran a terrific personal best 5K race in 18:47 while Christine, who ran away from the field, also set a PR (personal record) at 19:32.
But it was a day of PRs: Chandler Julien ran 19:56 (under 20 minutes for the first time...look out Fudge!); Ian Hawkes ran his best race of the season finishing 15th in 20:13; Ian Gallagher was close behind finishing 20th in a PR 20:24; while John Jessen dazzled his coaches with a 25th place 21:09 PR (John would probably be the best 6th grade runner in any school that Fernando did not attend). The boys finished 3rd of 4 scoring team ahead of host Norfolk Academy.
With strong support from Jessica Link and Isabella Simmons who tied for 5th place in PRs of 21:22 and great running from Meredith Watkins (PR 23:23) Madison Karnes (PR 23:46...a long way from a season opening time of 30 minutes) and Samantha Cucuel (PR 26:50) the girls finished 2nd in the team race only 11 points behind winner Veritas in a field of 6 complete teams.
We should all be very proud of the efforts of our JV runners
