The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee rolled out automated phone calls Monday in Virginia's 2nd Congressional District Monday targeting Rep. Scott Rigell, R-Virginia Beach, over the looming fiscal cliff and the fate of President George W. Bush's tax cuts.
The DCCC is pressuring Rigell to sign a discharge petition that would force a House of Representatives vote on a plan to preserve the Bush tax cuts for middle income earners while letting those for incomes over $250,000 a year expire.
Congress has until Dec. 31 to act on extending some or all of the cuts. If it doesn't then all of the cuts expire helping to send the nation over the fiscal cliff.
So far 178 House members have signed the discharge petition, which requires 218 signatures to force a vote.
In the automated calls the DCCC accuses Rigell of "holding the middle class hostage to get more reckless, budget-busting tax cuts for millionaires."
President Barack Obama successfully campaigned for reelection last fall on letting the tax cuts expire on incomes over $250,000 as a way to help close the nations roughly $1.2 trillion budget deficit.
Rigell has voted to extend all of the Bush tax cuts repeatedly in the past. However he campaigned on raising federal revenues in addition to budget cuts as a way to close the budget gap. Rather than raise tax rates on higher income earners, Rigell has said he wants to close tax loopholes, deductions and extensions in order to generate more revenue.

"Hi this is Julie calling on behalf of the DCCC. Did you know Congressman Scott Rigell could make sure Congress votes to extend tax cuts for the middle class and avoids the fiscal cliff, but he refuses. If Congressman Rigell doesn’t act, the average middle class family will be stuck with a crushing $2,200 tax hike.
Why? Because Congressman Rigell is holding the middle class hostage to get more reckless, budget-busting tax cuts for millionaires. It’s wrong.
It’s critical you make your voice heard. Demand that Congressman Rigell get a vote to extend tax cuts for the middle class immediately, not hold the middle class hostage to get more tax cuts for millionaires. Go to GOPHostageTakers.comto demand that Congressman Rigell force the vote and avoid the fiscal cliff."
