Alleged White House state dinner crasher and 2013 Republican candiate for Virginia governor Tareq Salahi kicked off a campaign tour in Williamsburg Sunday where he attended the Virginia Municipal League conference.
In a campaign press release, Salahi said the fist stop of his "listening tour" was a success in that he was able to meet with and hear the concerns of local leaders from around the state.
"It was impressive to attend the VML Conference and be able to essentially tour Virginia in one evening meeting with so many Mayors and other local leaders," Salahi said.
A former vintner from Northern Virginia, Salahi is best known for causing a stir when he and his then wife Michaele attended a White House state dinner in honor of India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in November 2009 allegedly without an invitation. He and his now ex-wife went on to star in the Bravo reality TV show Real Housewives of D.C. in 2010.
Salahi faces stiff competition in the race for the GOP 2013 gubernatorial nomination, facing off against Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli. The state Republican Party will choose its nominee at a convention next summer.
