The Concerned Citizens of the Mid Peninsula Committee is hosting Dr. Michael Coffman Tuesday to speak out against the United Nations Agenda 21 plan for sustainable development in Mathews County.
Agenda 21 is a U.N. sponsored plan developed at the 1992 U.N. climate conference Rio de Janeiro, and is designed to implement sustainable development at local, national and global levels.
Coffman and the Concerned Citizens of the Mid Peninsula Committee characterize Agenda 21as an government intrusion on citizens' property rights.
"The goal of this committee is to inform the citizens of the Mid Peninsula of this threat to their ability to own and use their property and take action to reverse this government take over of our land," the group said in a press release.
President George H. W. Bush signed the Agenda 21 accord in 1992, but Congress failed to ratify it. President Bill Clinton put the agreement into effect through executive order in 1993, but Congress has still not approved the measure.
The meeting is open to the public.
