In what is seen as one of the most hotly contested races of this election season, Sen. John Miller, D-Newport News, and Republican challenger Mickey Chohany will face off in their first debate Friday evening.
The debate between candidates for the 1st Senate District is sponsored by the Virginia Peninsula League of Women Voters and will be moderated by Daily Press editorial page editor John Fredericks. The race is being heavily targeted by state Republican leaders as they try to win back control of the Senate, which Democrats control with a 22-18 majority. Gov. Bob McDonnell has donated a little more than $50,000 to Chohany's campaign, with the state GOP kicking in $34,435 and Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment, R-Williamsburg, giving $8,150, according to the Virginia Public Access Project, which monitors campaign contributions in the state. When: 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30 Where: Newport News Fountain Plaza II 700 Town Center Drive, Newport News
