The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is endorsing U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, as a pro-business Democrat who sided with the business community on a number of major votes in the past two years.
It's unclear how far the endorsement will go in Nye's race againstRepublican Scott Rigell and Independent candidate Kenny Golden. Rigell, who owns Freedom Automotive, was inducted into the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce and he was among friends when the three hopefuls sat down with the candidates on Monday.
But it was based on Nye's votes against the health care reform bill, against environmental legislation capping carbon emissions and against a campaign finance transparency bill - dubbed the Disclose Act - which is currently stalled in the Senate.
According to Chamber spokesman J.P. Fielder Nye did get the endorsement because of his votes in line with chamber opinions. Fielder said that the business group didn't put out a list of endorsements because they're doing them on a case-by-case basis.
"He was a pro business Democrat," Fielder said bluntly.
This is a nice win for Nye, but it's unclear exactly how far it's going to go down here in Hampton Roads. You can expect Nye to spend some time promoting the endorsement - and trying to use it as a shield against the anti-incumbent wave the many are expecting to hit Washington in November.
