If the run up is any sign for tonight's debate between U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, Republican Scott Rigell and Independent Kenny Golden - the campaigns are taking the standoff very seriously.
All three of the campaigns blanketed Virginia Beach Boulevard with yard signs just in case there was any doubt about the extra traffic in central Virginia Beach - and there's a serious crowd filing into the auditorium at Princess Anne High School.
Golden was working the crowd out in front of the school shaking hands a hailing folks with his familiar cry "How are you shipmate?" Meanwhile, Rigell has been inside working the aisles and Nye is also up front shaking hands and making small talk with handfuls of voters who have come out for the debate. The crowd looks like it's well over 500 people at this point - with folks still walking through the front door.
That attendance is very solid for and August debate - but then again this district has been a target for Republicans since the day that Nye beat Thelma Drake in 2008 - so it's no surprise to see a healthy turnout. Political insiders say the race between Nye, Rigell and Golden is going to be a toss up between Nye and Rigell with Golden playing the spoiler.
But it's still a long way to November 2, and the complexion of the race is only starting to emerge. It looks like the three men are heading to the stage right now. We;ll be back soon with an update.
