The seven Republicans - did I miss anyone? - vying for the GOP spot against U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye are set to face off tonight in a debate set up by the Hampton Roads Tea Party.
Right now Nye faces at least seven opponents -Kenny Golden, Ben Loyola, Bert Mizusawa, Ed Maulbeck, Scott Rigell, Jessica Sandlin and Scott Taylor. It's unclear if all seven of these folks are going to be there tonight, but we've heard from a few who are going. The event promises to be something of as free-for-all simply because having seven candidates on stage can be a tricky thing.
But it ought to be interesting to see how these GOP folks engage the Tea Party movement, which is notorious skeptical of partisan intrigue and wrangling. These folks are taking on Nye, who has a conservative voting record for a freshman Democrat - casting votes against President Barack Obama's budget and twice against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on health care reform.
The natural inclination is going to be to run a hard right campaign in the hopes of winning the June primary, but a cast of seven characters from all over the political map means that this race is going to be muddled from the beginning.
Just to give you an early primer here are the candidates online headquarters so you can get a sense of who you're dealing with.
And don't forget we'll be live online at 11 a.m. at Shadplank to talk about the primary race in the second district and basically anything else political in Virginia - come lob a question at us.
So there's some required reading for tonight's debate. The debate starts at 7 p.m. at the Wyndham Hotel 5700 Atlantic Avenue, Virginia Beach Virginia.
