Sure Democrats brought in the president, but Republican Bob McDonnellis slowly but surely attracting bigtime Republicans to his side during this campaign.
This afternoon McDonnell will rally in Virginia Beach with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a one-time presidential contender in 2008, who eventually dropped out of the contest. When the economy bottomed out at the end of the 2008 campaign, there were some Republicans who wished that the party had chosen Romney over John McCain, because of Romney's reputation as a businessman.
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani also hit a McDonnell campaign headquarters in Northern Virgnia with the candidate this morning.
Now Romney appears to be preparing for a 2012 run at President Barack Obama, and nailing down some allies in Virginia. For McDonnell's campaign Romney will likely talk up the need to create jobs and curb government spending - as any good businessman would. I'd imagine that the two are probably going to ignore health care considering Massachusetts' universal insurance program.
The rally is at the Westin Hotel and starts a little bit after noon.
