U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, the new Democratic representative for the 2nd District, is calling on Congress to funnel some economic stimulus money into construction on military bases.
The 2nd District, largely Hampton, Norfolk and Virginia Beach, includes several military bases, including Naval Station Norfolk and the soon-to-be-closed Fort Monroe.
On Thursday, Nye sent a letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi that read, in part:
“Military construction is a key component of both our national security and our national economy. Every dollar spent on military infrastructure supports not one but two family wage jobs – providing for both the workers who plan, design, and build the structure, as well as the military personnel that it supports.”
“The men and women who serve our country in uniform deserve the best facilities and resources that we can provide, and now the Congress has an opportunity to support our troops even as we work to bolster the economy.”
Congressman Glenn Nye is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, which has jurisdiction over all legislation relating to the military, including the annual military construction authorization bill.
Virginia’s 2nd District includes Naval Station Norfolk, which is home for the Navy’s greatest concentration of Naval forces, as well as a large number of Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard personnel. The district also contains Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, which has a payroll of over $821 million and employs more than 14,000 military and civilian personnel, as well as NAS Oceana, which includes a Navy community of over 20,000, and is the largest employer in Virginia Beach.
