Jim Gilmore cancels local golf outing...

No real official word on exactly what went down with a Jim Gilmore golf outing this week at Kiln Creek Golf Club and Resort, but the Thursday event has been ditched.

The folks in the pro-shop said that they weren't sure what the reason was, but it appears that this might be another case of the Republican struggling to fill up his campaign coffers. Gilmore is hoping to fill the seat being left behind by retiring Republican U.S, Sen. John Warner, but so far the former governor is having some trouble funding the race. It doesn't help that he's facing that other, unrelated Warner - fellow former Gov. Mark R. - who is a bit of a fundraising beast.

According to the flier for the golf outing, you could become a "champion" by offering up $2,300. That prestige would garner you a "one foursome, tournament-wide recognition & reception." Thrity souls could chip in $75 for the reception only.

The guest list was supposed to include U.S. Rep Rob Wittman, state Sen. Frank Wagner, R-Virginia Beach and Del. Phil Hamilton, R-Newport News, although Hamilton said he had a prior commitment in Richmond but was planning on getting back in time for the reception - if the event wasn't called off.

Guess we'll have to read the tea leaves on this, but the campaign probably could have used a few "champions."

Sorry to say you're wrong--but you are most certainly wrong about Marshall doing better than Gilmore; as bad as Gilmore's plight is, the last polls before the convention had Marshall at 20 percent name ID (it was less than 50 percent among all voters in his home county--which is actually better than usual for a state Rep. but still bad compared to Gilmore's 70 percent) & if your convervative base loved Marshall so much, why did they only manage to contibute less than $90,000 to the noble cause? It may be embarrasing to the GOP that Gilmore is being outraised 7 to 1 by Warner but what does it say about conservative loyalty that Gilmore has outraised Marshall 12 to 1? (Meaning Warner, before even touching his own money, had a 500-1 dollar advantage)

Sure Marshall almost won despite being badly outspent but that is only because no really showed up for the convention--after predicting over 7,000 attendees as had come in the past, the VA GOP had to downgrade expecations to the press by announcing 6,200, then 5,500 & in the end, barely over 4,000 bothered to show up to the most important GOP event this year.

That pretty much sums up the state of Virginia Republicans.

Had the true nominee, Bob Marshall, been the candidate right now, we would not be having any difficulty mobilizing the base.

The convention appeared to be rigged and, true or not, there are millions of Republicans who remain convinced that the nomination was stolen from Bob Marshall through convention funny-business.

Many of us are not supporting the political correctness worshiper, Mark Warner, but we have seen nothing from the Gilmore campaign to earn our trust and support.

In spite of the current climate of mistrust, Mr. Gilmore may yet prevail. Mark Warner absolutely must spend millions to gather the needed support to win. All Mr. Gilmore needs to do is win back the trust of the Evangelicals and libertarian-Republicans. That feat will not take big dollars, just honesty.
