State Del. Jeff Frederick, chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, held a conference call a short while ago to call for a state investigation into voter fraud charges first reported last week by the Daily Press (click here to read that story).
Two 18-year-olds from Newport News and a 22-year-old from Hampton were charged in Hampton last week with one count each of voter registration fraud. Police said then that the three were working for a non-profit firm that was paying them to register voters. When the three didn't meet their daily quota, police said, they supposedly made up names to make up the difference -- 60 to 80 names among them.
Frederick, mentioning also reports of voter registration fraud in Richmond, called for an investigation of "what appears to be coordinated and widespread voter fraud activities occurring throughout Virginia."
He urged Gov. Tim Kaine and Attorney General Bob McDonnell to begin a statewide investigation.
