With Barack Obama locking up frontrunner status over Hillary Clinton during the North Carolina and Indiana primaries, it's only natural that specualtion abounds over his vice presidential pick.
In the latest edition of political analysis in Larry Sabato's Crystal Ball, Gerald Pomper a political science professor at Rutgers University makes the case for U.S. Sen. Jim Webb. Pomper knocks down the rationale behind a "dream ticket" with Obama and Clinton and then says that Webb's military background and Navy experience would offset Obama's newcomer-status to foreign policy.
Pomper also suggests that picking Webb would also help Obama shed the elitist label that Clinton is currently trying to stick to his chest. It's an interesting argument, and it certainly seems to make more strategic sense then the rumors that Obama might pick Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, one of his earliest supporters.
And it's important to note that Webb pledged to remain neutral in the race - what just a few posts ago on this blog?

Sure - take an elitist rookie with a dubious background and circle of friends and associates that no person in their right mind would want to be tied to and bring in the firebrand from Virginia who has alienated just about everyone in his home state. I'm thinking fish in a barrel.
