Senate Democrats have officially named committee chairs, ending months of speculation about who would be in charge of which panel.
There aren't any huge surprises here, but it's clear that there's a major shift going on. Last year every Senate panel was chaired by a white man. In January, seven women will run committees, including three African-American women from Hampton Roads.
Here's the list:
Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources – Sen. Patsy Ticer of Alexandria.
Commerce and Labor – Sen. Dick Saslaw of Fairfax.
Courts of Justice – Sen. Henry Marsh III of Richmond.
Education & Health – Sen. Edd Houck of Spotsylvania.
Finance – Sen. Chuck Colgan Sr. of Prince William County.
General Laws and Technology – Sen. Mamie Locke of Hampton.
Local Government – Sen. L. Louise Lucas of Portsmouth.
Privileges & Elections – Sen. Janet Howell of Fairfax.
Rehabilitation and Social Services – Sen. Linda "Toddy" Puller of Fairfax.
Rules – Sen. Mary Margaret Whipple of Arlington.
Transportation – Sen. Yvonne B. Miller of Norfolk.
Yet to be seen: What will that change really mean for legislation?
