Venturing into the wacky world of bridesmaids!

For nearly eight years, I’ve catered mainly to brides searching for wedding gowns, the occasional party-goer searching for a formal gown, the high-schooler looking for a prom or ring dance dress and the mothers looking for gowns to wear to their children’s weddings.  I’ve only had limited dealings with bridesmaids.  As a consignment shop, it is difficult to serve the wedding party because they often need a variety of colors, shapes and sizes, and we typically only get one of everything.  But after years of missing out on the ability to serve the rest of the bride’s party, I’ve decided it’s time to take on the bridesmaids! 

Blush is now carrying a new bridesmaid line by Jordan.  We’ve got about 20 samples in the shop for
brides and maids to peruse, plus many other styles that can be viewed online at www.jordanfashions.com.  I was hesitant to go into this foray because you have many more ladies to deal with and when ordering dresses, the potential for problems could be enormous, but I decided to bite the bullet and give it a try.  There aren’t many options in this area besides David’s Bridal, so at least it gives brides other choices in affordable price points.  So I’m up to the challenge of trying, measuring, ordering and assisting all the bride’s attendants so we can become more of a one-stop shop!  Wish me luck!

The morning after Hurricane Isabel struck SouthEastern Virginia, I was thinking of my wife and son. I had spent a sleepless night at the resort owned by my company, while my wife and son had stayed with my In Laws. I hopped in my car as soon as the sun came up and expected to make the 2 mile tripped to them in minutes. I was very wrong.

As I looked around from my balcony I saw our Resort Maintenance Staff suverying the damage and knew this would be no quick drive. Fallen trees were everywhere. The power had been out since about 6 PM the previous evening. Pools of water had formed all over the pristing lawns.

The drive took about an hour. I had to stop frequently to move branches out of the way of my car. Bigger trees required detours. I finally made it to my family to find that they were safe and sound, in spite of an enormous oak which had fallen (gently, thank goodness) on to my In Laws house. I was relieved.

Getting to my own home 11 miles away was another story. The drive took almost 2 hours. But the worst was yet to come. While walking around my house I noticed that the outside air conditioning unit had moved. It was no longer on the cement slab in my backyard. It was now about 10 feet away in my neighbor’s yard. The wires and tubes were hanging out of the bottom.

The power was out at my home, of course and stayed that way for about 2 weeks. I had no generator. I had only one flashlight and no extra batteries. I had no bottled water. I had very little canned food. I had no new books to read. In fact, I had no entertainment at all. Those 2 weeks were miserable.

So now, I am prepared for the next storm. I never expected such a disaster in this area. I thought these things only hit Florida and the Gulf Coast Region. I was wrong. So I bought a generator and 2 of the best flashlights I could afford. I bought batteries too, of course. When a storm is on it’s way and it looks like we will be affected, I pick up some bottled water and some canned foods I actually don’t hate. I grab a few books and magazines. And I settle in comfortably knowing that when the nasty storm passes, everything will be just fine after the rain.
