What's in a name?

When it comes to bridal gowns, a designer name can mean the world or nothing at all depending on the bride wearing the gown! Of course, everyone knows designers to the stars like Monique Lhuillier and Vera Wang and you will shell out a pretty penny to wear one of their custom frocks.
Others like Kleinfeld’s own Pnina Tornai of TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress” series could put you back the cost of a nice car! Elaborate hand-sewn beaded and lace gowns can go for five figures in the luxury salon in NYC.

But, whether you wear an off-the-rack sample by a no-name manufacturer or a one-of-a-kind ensemble from a fancy designer, chances are your guests won’t know the difference. Yes, the quality of the fabrics and attention to detail and construction will undoubtedly be better from a high-end designer, but you can certainly find a beautiful and well-made gown at a reasonable price point. And unless you tell each guest (which is kind of tacky) they won’t have a clue what the label on the inside of your gown says. So look for quality and don’t worry about the name. If you feel
beautiful in the gown, it doesn’t matter whose name is sewn inside. However, if you've got your heart set on that designer gown and you don't have to put a second mortgage on your house to afford it, then go for it!

Your wedding doesn't have to cost $27,000

Those who’ve planned or are currently planning a wedding shouldn’t be at all surprised to hear the average wedding in the U.S. costs nearly $27,000. (Much more than that in certain cities.) It’s easy to lose control of a budget when you see all the choices brides are overwhelmed with. Seems like every day the prices for goods and services associated with weddings go up. The shell shock is astounding since you probably aren’t familiar with using many of the services that are wedding-centered. If you haven’t hired a wedding photographer before, how are you supposed to know a popular one with beautiful work can cost over $5000? Or that a slice of wedding cake can be upwards of $3 per person?

The good news is there are ways to trim a budget and still have a fabulous wedding. There is a
wealth of knowledge on the internet these days with DIY projects and hints on saving money. Or you can hit the bookstore and browse through the plethora of bridal magazines and books
dedicated to budget-minded brides. If you get creative and take some time to research you may find it’s easier than you think to stick to a tight budget without anyone knowing you were trying to
be thrifty. In the end, it’s one day out of your life and there are probably a lot more sensible things to spend that kind of money on…like a car or a house maybe? Your wedding day can be just as special on a $10,000 budget as it could be on a $50,000 one. Just don’t get sucked in to the wedding hype and you will be just fine!

Birds on Fire - (Kindle Fire)

    Kindle-fire-full-color

    Birds on Fire

It happened when one day while I was sitting on my couch in my Angry Birds boxer shorts. I was playing the game of the same name on my Kindle Fire as my son looked at me from the other side of the couch and said, "dad, are you playing Angry Birds again?" I looked at him and smiled and said "yes son, I am." He winked at me and said "me too dad, me too". He was indeed playing the game, on HIS brand new Kindle Fire. It was at that precise moment (or maybe later) that I realized that I was hooked on Amazon.com.

You see, the grand total of our matching Fires was $399.98. I paid no tax, so don't strain yourself trying to figure that part out. As soon as our new devices arrived via 2 day UPS (free because I am a proud member of Amazon Prime - not to mention the Knights of Columbus) I registered the devices at Amazon and immediately downloaded free versions of every Angry Bird version I could find on to both of them. Yes, there were small ads with the free versions of the games. But who cares? I had managed to pick up a pair of tablets and loaded them with fun for less than the price of a single iPad!

I decided that in order to use the Fires to their full potential, I should perhaps consider the fact that they are "also" e-readers and use this fantastic technology to make a smarter child. I downloaded some books (for FREE, are you paying attention?) from my new favorite website on to my son's Kindle.. I got a book of fun facts about Troy Aikman, another about Jeremy Lin, and a couple of kids books. Why? Because I was going to improve my son's reading level, that's why. Did you leave to get a drink or something? And because I'm notoriously cheap - but that's just between us (and my wife, who doesn't agree with me that paper towels should be "reused").

Anyway, I'm hooked. I'm attached, addicted and deeply smitten with Amazon.com. When I get an Amazon Gift Certificate in my hands I run, not walk to the site to see what's hot. Then I buy it. Because you only live once. And because kids should be smarter and make you feel less guilty about using technology.

    Enjoy the games!

5 Step Checklist For Picking Your New Laptop

    LAP

5 Step Checklist For Picking Your New Laptop

Picking out a new laptop can be a dizzing process if you do not have some sort of strategy. I recommend a "needs based" approach. This will help you make many of the major decisions and will filter the PC market from vast down to finding "ON SALE" that actually fits your needs! I'll be dealing with PCs here because there are just a few Mac models and if your going to shell out those dollars, you likely know what you want anyway.

Many techs tell people just to read reviews on Newegg and Amazon, decide how big you want the screen and go for it... We do recommend reading reviews at Newegg and Amazon, but you need to work up a "mental model" of your laptop needs before you start reading the reviews.

The First two items on the Needs Checklist are screen size and battery life.

Checklist Item #1 Form Factor which drives Screen Size --- Basically you can split mainstream laptops down into 3 categories; Large, Midsize, and Small(ish).

-- Large generally means 17" and above, usually heavy and are basically a desktop computer you can carry around. You can get plenty of disk, memory, screen real estate. You will also get other important desktop features, like extra usb ports, video capabilities and so on.. This is the one you will most likely need if your a hard core gamer or need to extensively process photos or video.

-- Midsize generally means 13" to 16" and usually gives a price point and features list that is attractive to the average user.

-- Small generally 12" and under which includes super light tablets, netbooks and a diverse range of the laptops that have been sized with a smaller screen, keyboard and less features.

These are broad generalizations that are meant to help build a "mental model" of your needs. Do you need a large screen because of your poor eyesight or do you work with large spreadsheets? Do you need a "portable desktop"? If not, then when you see the price of these big screen beasts, you will likely be drawn to a smaller form factor. If you want extreme portability and are basically going to surf, socialize, play lightweight games, email and use it as a reader, then the tablet is the ticket. If the tablet prices seem a little high for your budget right now, look at the netbooks the other small format laptops. While the large form factor laptops are almost always at the top of the price range, the smalls are split. The netbooks tend to be very economical because people have drifted towards the tablet, but if you need a low end price point, don't rule out a netbook. That leaves the middle of the road, the average buy which is the midsize. If you can rule out the netbook,
tablet and the large screen laptops, then you are left with the sweet spot of the market. These 13" to 16" laptops are the most numerous by model and vendor, the most configurable for add-ons, and most often on sale

What is the sweet spot right now, it is the 15-16 inch laptop with an Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB memory, and 500GB hard drive for right around $400. If your not seeing that on sale, keep looking and you will. That is a lot of computer for $400 or less. if you watch the sales on Crazytowndeals.com you will see them come up almost weekly

Checklist Item #2 Battery Life --- This can be a tough one to nail down because it can depend on what your doing on the laptop. Some screen intensive operations pull power like crazy and if your a person that cranks up your the screen brightness, well it all effects the battery life.  Generally speaking, you can also relate the number of square inches of screen to battery life. I had a 10" netbook that I loved because it did everything I needed and would regularly get 6-7 hours of battery life. We recently bought a Kindle FIRE and are very happy with the battery life. My big dog work laptop gets 2 hours from a ton of battery and that is the top end. So read the reviews and just remember that generally if you need more battery run time, you have to pay for it.... more money, less screen, and less power hog devices.

Checklist Item #3 RAM --- Thats easy, the more the merrier! For the smallest laptops, it is not uncommon to find 1 MB of Ram loaded, but if your going to stream video (Youtube or Netflix), you will need to step up to at least 2 MB of ram and either stay with a tablet or move up to a midsize laptop. For a rule of thumb, 2MB is the low end.... 4MB is mucho better.

At this point you should be getting a pretty good idea of what your shopping for and it is a good time to see who is respected as far as build quality, price, service and so on... PCWorld and other such mags are a good place to start to see who builds what and generally what the price points are.. Also review NEWEGG and AMAZON reviews to get some feedback from real users. Builders come and go over the years. Right now the leaders are clearly, Dell, IBM and Apple. Do others make laptops? Sure, but if you need a recommendation, I'd stay in this group of MAKERS.

Checklist Item #4 LATEST WIZ BANG TECH--- OK, generally you pay a hefty premium for newer generation components like the latest processors and solid state drives. What do you get? World Peace! Well, almost. You get faster boots, much better performance if your doing compute intensive operations like encoding video, and longer battery life. So if budget is not a real issue and your a power gamer or do video production, make sure you look for the latest quad core processors and as large an SSD drive as you can afford. For the average user, using a
processor that is a generation back is fine (i3 is the sweet spot right now), but if you can afford it, a small boot SSD can really make your life easier.

Checklist Item #5 Inputs and Outputs Gotta Haves ---

USB Ports-- remember to figure out how many you need. Generally at least 2 of them. One for a wireless mouse micro transmitter and another for either thumb drive, camera, ipod, DVD drive or a usb connected hard disk. 3 would be better but most can get by with 2. If you need HDMI outputs or other specific ports, then your typically out of the sweet spot. Also, having an SD card reader is really nice if you have SD devices.

Webcam-- If you plan on video chatting with friends and family, make sure your laptop comes with a built-in webcam. Most should, but not all will, and this is an easy component to forget.

So there you have it, a short list of what your Laptop NEEDS. Keep looking around for a week or so and you will be able to find the sweet spot laptop. Believe me..... vendors think this way and always have that sweet spot device occasionally on sale. For Dell, its the Inspiron 15 laptop with Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB memory, and 500GB hard drive for $379.99 shipped. Good Luck, do your homework, and buy what you need, not what you want.
