Wedding budget can test your financial compatibility

Whether you are paying for your wedding as a couple or you have help from family, setting and sticking to a budget can test your financial planning skills. It’s an eye-opener to see the costs involved with wedding vendors…I mean, how many of you have ever had to price a photographer or caterer before? Once you know what dollar amount you are comfortable spending on the entire affair, you’ll have to start testing the waters to see what you can (and can’t) afford. Use this exercise to see how you and your fiancé value financial matters. You can learn a lot about each other and your money styles by working together to budget (and cut) costs for your wedding.

Maybe you want to break up the duties…give him the band/DJ and caterer, while you focus on the cake and invitations and then meet to see what you have come up with. Or you can both research all aspects and maybe come up with more options that way. Whatever you do, be willing to listen to each other’s suggestions. This may be the first true test of your financial compatibility and you need to be willing to communicate and see your fiancés point of view. You may really want to spend
less and get a DJ, but he has his heart set on his favorite cover band. This could be your opportunity to give up something else to make it work. It’s all about compromise! And if you can’t plan your wedding budget without a heated argument every day, take a look at whether you can plan your entire financial future together or not.

While a wedding is an opportunity to publicly affirm and celebrate a couple's commitment, it's also a time that tests the bride and groom's financial compatibility. If they're not careful, the newlyweds will find that the aisle leads them from the altar to a monetary morass that will be anything but a honeymoon.
