Cheerleader

1. How many years have you been cheering?

I started cheering as a mascot for youth when I was 3.

2. As a captain, what do you think is your biggest responsibility to the team?

My biggest responsibility as a captain is definitely showing leadership and being a positive role model for my team, always making sure to set the right example.

3. What is your biggest strength as a cheerleader?

My biggest strength would have to be my dance. I know when to hit motions and be sharp, but also when to be smooth. I know how to get down if you know what I mean!

4. Which sport is your favorite to cheer for?

I like cheering for football most, I love the excitement of the game and of the fans, and trying to pep those boys up!

5. Besides cheering, do you play any other sports?

I take tumbling and dance classes to keep my body in shape but because cheerleading is demanding and can be time-consuming, it’s the only sport I participate in for PHS.

6. What do you believe it takes to bring the spirit of Poquoson High to its highest level?

I think having over-all confidence in our teams that are competing against each other is what it takes to bring our spirit up. No one wants to cheer for a team that isn’t worth cheering for!

7. What stunt or stunts do you think are the hardest ones to do successfully?

The most challenging stunts are our stunt sequences for competition. We set the bar with a higher level of difficulty but perfecting each stunt and having the endurance to complete each one is what makes it so hard.

8. What is your favorite thing about living in Poquoson?

I like the feeling of being in a safe environment and having the opportunity to be educated through such a great school system.

9. What activities do you like to do in your free time?

I like going to the beach, movies, and concerts, but most importantly anything that involves being with my friends!

10. Do you plan to cheer after you finish high school?

I’m keeping my options open, but I will most probably dance in college rather than cheer.

Amanda

Name: Amanda Evans
Grade: 12

1. How many years have you been cheering?

A total of 13 years. I started out as a mascot for Poquoson Youth and have been on Varsity since my sophomore year.

2. As a captain, what do you think is your biggest responsibility to the team?

I have many responsibilities as a Captain, one of the most important would probably be making sure the team keeps a good attitude and helping out wherever I am needed.

3. What is your biggest strength as a cheerleader?

Every girl on the team has something to offer, I have a lot of school spirit and try to give 110% into everything I do.

4. Which sport is your favorite to cheer for?

Definitely football, I love watching our boys play and getting the crowd pumped up. Being with them though the season and seeing them win the State title was amazing.

5. Besides cheering, do you play any other sports?

I don’t play any other sports besides cheerleading. I cheer from the time practice starts in August until basketball season is over.

6. What do you believe it takes to bring the spirit of Poquoson High to its highest level?

If the crowd doesn’t believe the team will do well, then neither will the boys. As cheerleaders our role is to make sure everyone in the stands keeps the spirit up and to make sure the boys feel motivated to do their best and not give up.

7. What stunt or stunt do you think are the hardest ones to do successfully?

We work very hard on our stunts at practice to make sure they are executed correctly, the hardest stunt for me to master would be a sequence stunt because as a base it is difficult to keep your flyer balanced through the series of high level stunts.

8. What is your favorite thing about living in Poquoson?

How close knit the community is, and the support that the community shows for the high school sports. And the fact that I will be graduating with the same kids that I went to kindergarden with.

9. What activities do you like to do in your free time?

Spending time with family and friends. Just normal teenager stuff like going to the movies or the beach.

10. Do you plan to cheer after you finish high school?

I wouldn’t cheer for college, but I’d like to coach youth or help Coach Julie out with the high school cheerleading team.
