Q and A with Cross Country Coach Jeff Gross

1. How long have you been coaching Cross Country?
This is my 4th season

2. How has the preseason conditioning and practice been going?
We have 40 athletes out for the team and the practices have been going better than anticipated.

3. On the Girls team, who are some of your key runners?
Senior Magen Freeman, Junior Courtney Rawlinson

4. On the Boys team who are some of your key runners?
Seniors Dennis Lyle and Shane Devlin, and Juniors Jeff Wakefield, WB MacPherson, and Sam Sydnor

5. How do you think both the Boys and Girls teams will do this year?
Both teams will be competitive and it will depend how strong and tight the remaining pack can be.

6. Which teams in the BRD are your toughest competition?
Jamestown is always tough boys and girls. Grafton girls, York boys.

Meet your Bull Islanders

Name: Jeffrey Wakefield

Grade: Junior

 

1. How long have you been running cross country?

 I started running cross country in 8th grade so this is my 4th year of running

 

2. How has preseason training been going?

 The preseason training so far has been going great.  Coach Gross has the team doing a good mix of speed, threshold, and long distance training preparing us for a strong showing once we get to the district championship and hopefully beyond.

3. Which team or teams do you think will be the toughest competition this year?

The Bay Rivers District in cross country is always extremely competitive with Jamestown winning the state title two years ago and Kyle King from Grafton winning the individual state title last year.  This year I think our toughest competition will come from Lafayette, York, and Grafton with Kyle King returning. 

4. Who are some of the key members of the Boys Cross Country team besides yourself?

 Seniors Dennis Lyle and Shane Devlin are both key members on our boy's cross country team this year as well as Junior Sam Cody Sydnor.

5. Which course is your favorite one to run on?

 My favorite course to run on would have to be the district championship course at Eastern State.  It is a difficult course but it is a true test of how far you are willing to push yourself.

6. Whats your best time in a meet and which course did it come on?

 My best time for a cross country meet was 19 minutes 15 seconds last year on our home course against Denbigh Baptist.

7. What are your expectations for yourself personally this upcoming season?

 My goals for this season are to improve upon my personal best time as well as contend for a spot in the top 15 runners at districts in order to advance on to regionals.

8. Besides Cross Country, do you play any other sports?

 I run both indoor and outdoor track for the high school.  Also, I used to play baseball and basketball.

9. What do you like best about living in Poquoson and attending PHS?

 The thing I like best about living in Poquoson is the way everyone knows each other. Also I like how the entire school and community takes a lot of pride in their athletics and always comes out in full force to support all of the teams

10. What do you do in your free time for fun?

In my free time I enjoy hanging out with my friends and watching sports on tv because I am a huge sports fan.

All athletes must have a VHSL physical form completed and all four pages signed (after May  1, 2010) on file with Activity Director or hand to the coach in order to participate.  No exceptions.

 

Physicals will be offered at Poquoson High School on July 27th from 4 to 6pm.
