Number one AA game of the week lives up to the hype!
Virginia Preps picked the Poquoson/Grafton game as the number one game of the week for all games played this past weekend. Seems they knew exactly what they were talking about.
The intensity was thick in the air long before kickoff. With a crowd of about 2,500 looking on, the Clippers took the opening kickoff, drove 76 yards in 9 plays for the games first score. For the Clipper faithful, that was to be the only bright spot of the night.
The Bulls controlled the clock on the next drive, using 15 plays and 7 minutes and 35 seconds, going 77 yards down the field. Unfortunately, they need 78 yards to score, and were denied as William Emeny was wrestled to the ground one yard short of paydirt.
The rest of the first half was a defensive struggle as both teams punted the ball back and forth down the field, Poquoson punting twice and Grafton 3 times.
Only an minute and a half into the second half, the Islanders knotted the score at 7 all. On a very quick 67 yard drive, speared by Dylan Hill's 50 yard scamper, William Emeny took it the last 5 yards for the Bulls TD.
After another Grafton 3 and out, PHS scored to take the lead for good on Emeny's 34 yard run, making it 14-7 Poquoson with well over one half of the third quarter still to play.
Another 3 and out for the Clippers and the Bulls took over on their own 27 yard line. Asserting their will against Grafton, they consumed over 6 minutes off the clock, using 11 plays to get the score on a beautiful pass from Chase Pinder to Tank Bloom from 21 yards out.
Any chance Grafton had of getting back into the game was stymied on the fifth play of their next drive when John Britt picked off Robbie Hiser's pass at the Poquoson 35 yard line.
The rest of the game was a defensive battle as both teams were unable tomount much offense. The final score was 21-7 Poquoson and the celebration began.
The Islanders square off next against the Warhill Lions at 7pm on Friday Sept 16th at Cooley Field.
