Poquoson tops Smithfield 42-13, finishes BRD play undefeated

The Islanders traveled to Smithfield friday night and came away with a 42-13 victory over the Packers. This allowed the Bulls to finish the regular season 9-0 in the Bay Rivers District.

The Islander's first score was set up on a 34 punt return by Jay Diggs. A crushing block by Evan Lemon allowed Diggs room to run. Diggs then scored three plays later on a 2 yard plunge.

With 2:35 left in the first quarter, Dylan Hill made it 14-o with a 4 yard run. Early in the second quarter, Smithfield cut the lead to 14-7, but that would be as close as they got the rest of the night. With just 40 seconds left in the half, Tee McConnell found Austin Turner in the back of the endzone for the third Islander score of the night. After a failed extra point, PHS lead 20-7 at half.

Just three plays into the third quarter, Jay Diggs found pay dirt for the second time, rolling 40 yards for the score. A 2 pt conversion attempt was successful, with William Haskins making a great catch of McConnell's pass. After a Smithfield fumble, Thomas Garris rumbled 29 yards for a score, with Luke Hill adding the 2 pt conversion on a run. That extended the Bulls lead to 36-7.

In the fourth quarter, with PHS comfortably in the lead and many second stringers in the game, the Packers added  6 points to their score on a long pass. After that, the Bulls ate up the clock until Thomas Garris scored from the 7 with 40 seconds left. The point after was no good, leaving the score at 42-13.

The Bulls will be at home on Friday November 19th against Nottoway in the first round of regional play. Game time TBD.
