Daily Press article by Marty O'Brien on Region I final

POQUOSON — —

Poquoson High's goal in the Region I Division 3 football championship game, Luke Hill explained, was to impose its will on James Monroe immediately. And, after the opening whistle, the only time the Islanders fell short manning up was the celebratory Gatorade shower.

Bulls dominate James Monroe, claim Region I title

Region champs
The PHS football team took the opening kickoff of the Region I Championship game, marched straight down the field and 14 plays, 80 yards and 5 minutes and 53 seconds later, took the lead for good. A 10 yard Thomas Garris run and Michael Lutz's extra point and the Islanders never looked back. Poquoson outgained the Jacket's  in the first half, 253 yards of offense to the Jacket's 53.

James Monroe never got clicking on offense in the first half. The same couldn't be said of the Bulls. with 7:08 left in the second quarter, Poquoson took over on the 50 yard line. Nine plays and almost 5 minutes later, Luke Hill plunged into the end zone from 3 yards out, giving the Islander's a 14-0 lead. On the enusing Jacket's possession, the only held the ball 30 seconds before having to punt. Then, as time expired on the clock, Luke Hill tossed a 38 yard touchdown pass to Dylan Hill. That let the Islanders go into the break up 21-0.

To open the second half, James Monroe went three and out. It only took PHS 5 plays to find paydirt again, with Luke Hill running 13 yards for the score.

Two plays into the next Jacket's drive, Luke Hill jumped an out route, stepped in front of Demontaz Brown's pass and went 33 yards to the house, extending the Bull's lead to 35-0.

The fourth quarter was the only time James Monroe showed any spark. With 9:33 left in the game, they scored on Brown's 35 yard touchdown pass, making it 35-7.

The Bull's answered right back though, going 79 yards on 11 plays, eating up 6 minutes of the clock. Jay Diggs scampered 16 yards for the last Islander score. That made it 42-7 and sewed up the Islander's Region I championship.

Of special note, Cody Hutchinson's 102 yards rushing pushed him over the 1000 yard mark for the year.

Next up for the Islanders is the Handley Judges. They play in the state semi-final's on Saturday, December 4th at 1:30 pm at Poquoson Middle school

Article in Daily Press about Cody Hutchinson

POQUOSON — — Often this time of year, Cody Hutchison and his dad, Buddy, travel to Cody's grandfather's in Pennsylvania to hunt. One of Cody's favorite memories with them is bagging an 8-point buck on his first hunt at age 11.

Cody Hutchinson rushed for 216 yards on 11 carries as the Islanders avenged a playoff loss from two years ago, beating the Nottoway Cougars 27-6.

The first half was dominated offensively by PHS, outgaining Nottoway 209 yards to 98. However, The Bulls went into the break down 6-0, courtesy of a 68 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jonathan Coombs to wide receiver Joe Whitaker.

The second half was more of the same for the Bulls. After stopping NHS on the opening drive, the Bulls took only three plays to take the lead for good, with Hutchinson going 55 yards for the score.Michael Lutz's point after made it 7-6.

After a three and out by the Cougars, Hutchinson bbroke away on a 74 yard run that set up a 4 yard run by Thomas Garris two plays later. After the extra point Poquoson lead 14-6 and never looked back.

On the first play from scrimmage after the kickoff, Baxter Bristow stripped the ball from Coombs hands and returned it 7 yards to the Nottoway 13 yard line. Four plays later, Jay Diggs plunged in from the one yard line. The point after was no good but the Bulls were now up 20-6.

Midway thru the 4th quarter, Hutchinson went 9 yards for his second touchdown of the night. The extra point made it 27-6, which was the final score.

The Islanders next take on James Monroe in the Region I final on Saturday November 27th at 1:30 PM at Poquoson Middle School. The winner earns a berth into the State Semi-finals on December 4th at the home field of this game.

Poquoson tops Smithfield 42-13, finishes BRD play undefeated

The Islanders traveled to Smithfield friday night and came away with a 42-13 victory over the Packers. This allowed the Bulls to finish the regular season 9-0 in the Bay Rivers District.

The Islander's first score was set up on a 34 punt return by Jay Diggs. A crushing block by Evan Lemon allowed Diggs room to run. Diggs then scored three plays later on a 2 yard plunge.

With 2:35 left in the first quarter, Dylan Hill made it 14-o with a 4 yard run. Early in the second quarter, Smithfield cut the lead to 14-7, but that would be as close as they got the rest of the night. With just 40 seconds left in the half, Tee McConnell found Austin Turner in the back of the endzone for the third Islander score of the night. After a failed extra point, PHS lead 20-7 at half.

Just three plays into the third quarter, Jay Diggs found pay dirt for the second time, rolling 40 yards for the score. A 2 pt conversion attempt was successful, with William Haskins making a great catch of McConnell's pass. After a Smithfield fumble, Thomas Garris rumbled 29 yards for a score, with Luke Hill adding the 2 pt conversion on a run. That extended the Bulls lead to 36-7.

In the fourth quarter, with PHS comfortably in the lead and many second stringers in the game, the Packers added  6 points to their score on a long pass. After that, the Bulls ate up the clock until Thomas Garris scored from the 7 with 40 seconds left. The point after was no good, leaving the score at 42-13.

The Bulls will be at home on Friday November 19th against Nottoway in the first round of regional play. Game time TBD.

Poquoson defense shuts down New Kent

The much anticipated match up between New Kent's running game and the Islanders vaunted defense became a one sided affair, with the Bulls shutting down Storm Parker and the Trojan's allowing only 42 yards of total offense for the game.

When the night drew to a close, the Bulls walked off the Poquoson Middle School field with a 41-0 victory, a Bay Rivers District Championship wrapped up, and a number 1 seed for the Regional playoffs. As long as the Islanders are winning in the post season, they wouldnt have to travel anywhere until the State Finals.

Luke Hill lead the Islander's defense with 13 tackles, followed by his little brother Dylan who had 12 and Jay Diggs who had 10. The defense swarmed all night, only allowing New Kent 3 first downs the entire evening.

Offensively, 5 Islanders scored running the ball. Cody Hutchinson, Tee McConnell, Luke Hill, Jay Diggs and Thomas Garris all rushed for touchdowns and Hutchinson also scored on a screen pass from McConnell.
