The Poquoson Islanders tough defense shut out the Grafton Clippers on Friday night, winning by a score of 7-0.
On a beautiful breezy evening, the defense for the Bulls shined brightly, shutting down the high powered Clipper offense, allowing them only 94 yards rushing and never allowing them to penetrate any deeper into PHS territory then the 44 yard line.
Poquoson swarmed to the ball all night, exhibiting gang tackling at it's finest. William Haskins led the team with nine tackles, with Thomas Garris, Jay Diggs and Evan Lemon pitching in 8 tackles each. However, these weren't the only stars on defense this night. The entire team put in a great effort, with the defensive line clogging holes, giving GHS no room to run. Stephen Boyer and Baxter Bristow led the charge for the line and Bristow even blocked a punt. The Hill brothers (Luke and Dylan) helped anchor the linebackers also, flying to the ball all night. The secondary only allowed Grafton QB Joe Cibrin to pass for 29 yards all evening, with Tee McConnell blanketing Dylan Stallings the whole game. Austin Smith picked off one of Cibrin's passes early in the first quarter to thwart the only real drive Grafton had the entire game.
On offense, the entire backfield ran hard all night behind a tremendous effort by the offensive line. In the second quarter alone, the Bulls took over on their own three and proceeded to milk almost 10 minutes of clock as they marched all the way to the Clipper 15 yard line. Although the field goal attempt by Michael Lutz was wide right, this drive ate up so much time that Grafton only ran 4 plays in the 2nd quarter, one of which was a punt.
In the second half, the two teams continued to trade punts until with 9:13 left in regulation the Bulls took over at their own 15. With big runs of 17 yards by Dylan Hill and 29 yards by Thomas Garris the Islanders moved inside the Grafton 25. On a big 4th and one from the 23 yard line, Cody Hutchinson sliced thru the left side of the line for a 7 yard run for first down. On another big play later in the drive, facing a third and 1 from the 7, Thomas Garris bulled for two yards, giving the Islanders a first and goal at the 5 yard line. On the next play, with 3:40 left, Luke Hill ran up the middle for the only Islanders score.
On the ensuing GHS drive, and facing a 4th and 9 with the game on the line, Hutchinson blasted Cibrin in the back for a sack, causing Grafton to give up the ball on downs. After kneeling on the ball, the Bulls had a huge win in BRD play.
The Islanders next game is Friday October 1st against Jamestown at home at 7 PM.

The Poquoson JV football team traveled to Bailey Field Wednesday night to take on the Grafton Clippers.
The Bulls opened the scoring on Reece Thornburg's TD run. The Clippers answered with a TD of their own and the teams went into the half tied at 7.
The second half was when it got real interesting. Poquoson took the opening kickoff and drove down the field, eating up clock as they went. However a Bulls fumble was recovered at the Grafton 25 by the Clippers. On the next play, GHS housed it, taking a 14-7 lead after the PAT.
PHS answered with a long scoring pass to Grayson Boyce, and Michael Roy added the PAT to tie things up. As regulation drew to an end, the Bulls got the ball to the Grafton ten yard line. The field goal team trotted out to attempt a 27 yard field goal with 10 seconds left in the game. After a perfect snap, hold and kick, the Bulls thought they had pulled ahead. However, the Grafton coach had called a time out just before the snap, trying to ice Michael.
So, the Bulls lined up again after the time out and Michael Roy split the uprights with the game winner.
Coach Bruza Helsel had this to say about the game. "We played really well tonite. I thought the guys left it all on the field. And Michael was clutch on the game winning kick. He didn't let the time out on the first one bother him at all."
