Bulls turn back Rams in BRD football 29-9
The Islanders opened district play Friday Sept. 17th, traveling to the James City County complex to take on the Lafayette Rams.
The Bulls took the opening drive and got as far as the Rams 24 before turning it over on downs, eating up almost 6 minutes of the clock.The ensuing Rams drive ended with a punt, with the Islanders taking over at their own 18. The first quarter ended in a scoreless tie.
On the Rams first possession of the second quarter, Evan Lemon picked off a Lafayette pass, returning it too the Rams 33 yard line. Following a 13 yard run by Tee McConnell, Cody Hutchinson plunged in from the four yard line for the first score of the game. Michael " Blue Shoes" Lutz added the extra point.
Lafayette put together a bit of drive after the Islanders touchdown, but Poquoson's defense toughened and forced a punt, which rolled out of bounds at the Bulls 14 yard line. Pinned deep in their own end of the field, it took only one play for Hutchinson to get them out of the hole. He broke a 67 yard run up the Islanders sideline, before being dragged down at the Rams 19. Five plays later, after a Luke Hill 1 yard TD run and Lutz's extra point. The Bulls lead 14-0. That was the score as both teams left the field at halftime.
The Rams opened the second half slinging the ball around. After a 10 play, 84 yard drive, the found the end zone, bringing the score to 14-7. On the ensuing kickoff, the Bulls got pinned on their own 10. After a three and out, William Haskins punt was blocked, going out of the end zone for a Rams safety.
After that, the Poquoson defense stiffened, stopping LHS from doing anything. The Rams punted, and after a 42 yard run from scrimmage by Luke Hill, his brother Dylan took it in for a score. A bad snap from center caused Luke Hill to have to throw on the extra point and he found Russell Thornburg all alone in the corner of the end zone. After another Lafayette three and out, PHS took over with just 35 seconds remaining in the third.
On the first play of the 4th quarter, Tee Mcconnell scampered 35 yards for the last scoring of the game. Lutz's extra point bought the score to 29-9 in favor of the Islanders. Late in the game the Rams threatened again, but the clock expired with them on the Bulls 9 yard line.
Michael Lutz had a good special teams night, making all three extra points he tried, and on kickoffs had 3 touch backs and kept the Rams pinned deep all night.
Next up for the Islanders is the Grafton Clippers, who come to town Friday September 24th, with a 7 PM kickoff
