Where Does The 2010 Phoebus Phantoms Rank?

Now that 2010 VHSL football season is complete, you knew the inevitable question would soon loom over on 100 Ireland Street. Just how good were these Phoebus Phantoms this year? Comparisons can be very difficult and tricky and this one is no different. First of all, what will the comparisons be based on? Will it be the stats? Point differential? Opponents? Stars? You see, this debate can go on forever. I'd have to say that this year's edition is definitely in the conversation with the many other great teams. Personally, if I were to base it on stats and points differential there is no question that the 08 Phantoms were the best. They were seniors led by QB Tajh Boyd, RB Shawne Alston, DE Domink Davenport, LB Lovante Battle and soph DE/TE Daqaun Romero. If it were based on competition, that could be toss up, as it's too difficult to judge competition based on on the different eras. The 2001 and 02 Phantoms were very strong led by Xavier Adibi, Phillip Brown, Ronnie Hendricks, DJ Parker, Travis McRight, and Elan Lewis. They were much larger in size than the State Champs of recent years. The 06 and 09 squads were similar, as they didn't have as many big time stars but faced difficult challenges in the playoffs as was the case with this year's team. This 2010 team had perhaps the toughest run to the State Title with two late come from behind playoff victories against crosstown rival Hampton (12-7) and Dinwiddie (21-13) before rolling over mighty Stone Bridge 36-19.
