For Dave Johnson's Daily Press story on the game, go HERE.

When a basketball game is close, it seems like the only part of the game that matters is the ticking down of those final minutes when victory can be determined by a last second shot.  Of course I know it's the whole game that matters, all the effort, the coaching, the successful shots and strong defense that keeps each team in the game until the closing seconds.  But with two and a half minutes left in Friday's District Tournament Final, Menchville was up 54-51 and Phoebus was looking for an answer.  Menchville fans were on their feet as time ticked away - and no answer was found.  The Monarch's edged their way to a 64-56 victory, earning 6 of their final 10 points on free throws.

Menchville Rocks On and Off the Court

DSCN1945

It was rockin' night for Menchville High School, both on and off the court Thursday.  In basketball action, the Monarchs defeated Bethel 48-43 to reach the final game of the District Tournament. Patience and defensive rebounds in the second half kept the Monarch's mostly one shot ahead of the Bruins.  Menchville played a come from behind first half to lead 24 - 18 at halftime.   At the 6:56 mark in the 4th period, the game was tied at 34-34.  But the Monarch's showed a great deal of patience  when they had possession of the ball and pulled away to a 45-41 lead with one minute left in the game.  Bethel stretched out the last minute by fouling when the Monarch's had the ball, but Menchville's defense stayed the course to bring home the win.   For Dave Johnson's report on the game click HERE.

DSCN2066 In off the court action, the Menchville Rocks Concert Series, now in it's fourth year, showcased the talent of several bands and individuals to a packed house in the MHS auditorium.  Great show - Thanks to Pete Mercier for once again giving our talented artists a place to shine.

Menchville Students show their school spirit at the Hampton Basketball Game

Thursday night the Menchville Girls Basketball team ended a season that can only be described as a "growth" year for a group of young girls.  Thank you, girls, for showing character and effort every game.  Sequoia Morton scored 18 points in her senior game against Hampton.

The Menchville Boys took it to the wire again, with MJ dropping in a 3 pointer with 12 seconds left for a 42-41 victory over the Crabbers.  The Menchville students, who have been the 6th man at home games all season long, had a lot to cheer about.  The Monarch's got off to a slow start, scoring only 9 points in the first period.  They were shooting mostly from the outside, in the three point range and nothing dropped in the net.  Hampton was cold also; it was over 4 minutes into the period before either team scored.  Menchville finally began working their way into the paint, with Deshorn Lake scoring from under the basket, and Malcolm Powell quickly adding a couple of short range jumpers.  Free throws kept Hampton close (12/17 for the game).  The score was 17 -16, Menchville, at the half.

It must have been an inspiring half-time talk because Hampton looked strong in the third period.  I'm pretty sure they outrebounded us both offensively and defensively (I don't have the stats, but someone knows) and worked their way to a 30-21 lead with 3 minutes left in the period.  Menchville dropped in two quick three pointers to get within three - 27-30.  The fourth period was fearless on both sides of the court.  The game was tied  34-34 at the 3 minute mark.  MJ hit a three to move the Monarchs ahead, 37-36, and Macolm Powell rebounded his own missed free throw attempt to stretch the lead to 39-36.   With less than a minute left the score was again tied: 39-39.  The Crabbers got a bucket and Menchville got the ball with maybe 12 seconds left.  (I'm watching the game right now, not the clock) and MJ put up a three point shot from in front of the Menchville bench that sailed through the net.  42-41 - Game over.  Good luck at Districts.

Boy's Basketball Prevails over Denbigh

In a tense and exciting rematch, the Monarch's ruled over Denbigh Friday night 66-57. Play was even through much of the first period, with both teams trading points. At the four minute mark, with the score tied 11-11, Coach Koutoufas substituted all five players. Pressure by the fresh Menchville five forced 3 straight turnovers by the Patriots, who fell behind 15-11. A pass from Jordan Gilliam went through Tre Brown's hands out-of-bounds and Denbigh took advantage to pull within 1 point to end the first period 15-14. While both teams shot well in the 2nd period the Monarch's edged out a 32-30 half-time lead. Menchville opened the second half with 10 straight points, including two three pointers from Gilliam. Gilliam was the leading scorer for Menchville, with 15 points – all from 3 point range. Denbigh broke their scoring drought around the four minute mark, but the Monarch's maintained their lead into the fourth period. Denbigh closed to within 5 at the 3 minute mark, but another 3 pointer by Gilliam pretty much sealed the Monarch victory. Lorenzo Grimes had 10 points and was 4/4 from the free throw line. Micale Jacobs had 12 points ( 2 three pointers) Malcom Powell and Jordan McMillian had 9 points each and Ben Sealy added 7. The Monarchs went 18/26 from the free throw line.

Girls Basketball falls to Denbigh

For three periods last night the Lady Monarch's basketball team played, what I thought, was one of the most comfortable and confident games I've seen them play this year. They maintained a lead over the Denbigh Patriots for 3 periods, fading away in the fourth to lose 56-42. The Monarch's were without Marcella Midgett, who has a sprained wrist and isn't sure when she will return. Menchville lead 40 -27 at the end of the 3 period. The Patriots outscored Menchville 25-6 in the fourth period. The Patriots applied intense pressure to all aspects of their game, especially when the Monarch's tried to inbound the ball and Menchville's shots just stopped falling. Sequoia Morton had 14 points for Menchville, Brittini Cogdell and Brittany Hodges had 9 each, and Chelsea Richardson added 4. The Monarchs were 7 of 16 from the free throw line. The Monarchs won the first meeting in December 50-48.
