Kecoughtan sweeps titles in Peninsula District swim meet

NEWPORT NEWS -- What couldn't be decided in the Peninsula District boys swimming 10-meet regular season was finally solved on Saturday at the Midtown Aquatic Center.

In true form to that airtight race, which featured Menchville, Kecoughtan and Woodside splitting the title at 9-1, the meet championship wasn't decided until the final event.

Two Kecoughtan DBs commit

Kecoughtan running back/defensive back Aaron Matthews has committed to Old Dominion, and teammate Daishun Jackson plans to sign with Virgnia Union.

Matthews is taking an official visit to ODU's campus this weekend and will sign with the Monarchs on Wednesday, Kecoughtan coach Scott Woodlief said.

This time, it's Kecoughtan over Phoebus in the final seconds

HAMPTON — — For a moment there, as Yogi Berra might say, it looked like déjà vu all over again. Phoebus' Brian Darden, a.k.a. The Kecoughtan Killer, had struck again.

Only this time, he left too much time on the clock. And Rodney Bullock's layup off a Joshua Fortune assist with six-tenths of a second remaining gave the Warriors a 59-58 win and ended the Phantoms' perfect run through the Peninsula District.

Last Week in Peninsula District

Recapping last week in Peninsula District basketball, which was a very good one for a certain school across the York River.

BOYS PLAYER OF THE WEEEK: Rodney Bullock, Kecoughtan. The 6-foot-7 sophomore scored 76 points in three games (25.3 ppg) as the Warriors went 2-1. Bullock is averaging 20.2 ppg for the season, a half-point behind fellow sophomore Anthony Barber of Hampton for the district lead.

HERITAGE 55, KECOUGHTAN 46-Girls Basketball

Heritage (13-3, 12-1 PD) maintained an early edge at home against the Warriors (8-8, 7-6) to retain sole possession of the district lead.
Alanda Petes led the Hurricanes with 20 points and 12 rebounds, and teammate Alex Boothe-Delk also grabbed 12 rebounds.
Brittany Townes scored 15 for the Warriors.

KECOUGHTAN 70, HERITAGE 33- Boys Basketball

The Warriors bounced back from their upset loss to Gloucester, more than doubling up the Hurricanes.
Rodney Bullock and Joshua Fortune scored 19 apiece for Kecoughtan.

Kecoughtan Girls win in OT

KECOUGHTAN 54, DENBIGH 45, OT

Brittany Townes accumulated 16 points for the Warriors (6-7, 5-5), who outscored the host Patriots 11-2 in the extra period to cap an impressive comeback and stay ahead of Denbigh in the Peninsula standings.

Denbigh (4-9, 3-7), led by Jasmine Rawl's 22 points, was ahead 25-14 at halftime and 34-27 after three quarters. But Kecoughtan forced overtime with a 16-9 edge in the fourth quarter, then took command.

Denbigh stuns Kecoughtan 64-59- Boys Basketball

Paul Gostomski and Denzel Wise scored 18 points each as Denbigh achieved one of the bigger upsets of the Peninsula District boys basketball season, upending Kecoughtan 64-59.
