Girls' basketball team loses by one

HOWARD (MD.) TOURNAMENT

Kecoughtan missed a layup at the buzzer, enabling James Blake of Silver Spring, Md., to escape with a 46-45 win in the first round of a tournament at Howard High in Ellicott City, Md.

Chelsea Romero, the sister of Phoebus football star Daquan Romero, had 12 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks for the Warriors, who will play in Thursday's consolation game.

Kecoughtan, which overcame a 9-2 deficit and led by five points late in the third period, also got 13 points from Brittany Townes and 11 from Ashley Thompson but only hit 12 of 25 free throws.

Nikki Ostrow paced Blake with 22 points.

As a rookie starting linebacker for the New England Patriots, Jerod Mayo was surrounded by Pro Bowl icons such as Tedy Bruschi, Rodney Harrison and Mike Vrabel. Two years later, Mayo is the seasoned veteran counseling younger teammates.

Clearly the role suits him.

Recapping the 2010 Peninsula District football season

For the 13th time in 19 years, the Peninsula District brought home the Group AAA Division 5 championship. And for the third year in a row, the team was Phoebus.

Love 'em or hate 'em — and as with all great teams, there is little in-between — the Phantoms are unquestionably the team of the 21st Century. With 45 consecutive wins and a sixth title in 10 years, it was another remarkable run for Phoebus.

KHS Girls' Basketball Results 12/21

WOODSIDE 53, KECOUGHTAN 14

Woodside, the other co-leader, breezed as Alecia Bell scored 20 points and Adrienne Motley had 13.

Kecoughtan, still vastly improved at 3-3, never scored more than five points in a quarter. Warriors coach Kevin Williams estimated that his team only was able to attempt about 15 field goals against the Wolverines' stifling defense.

Post player Rajay Bullock's 21 points guided Kecoughtan to a home triumph.

Devonte Williams scored 16 and Joshua Fortune 11 for the Warriors (5-1 overall and in the Peninsula District), who built their lead to 40-27 entering the final period.

Woodside (1-5, 1-5) responded with a 26-point fourth quarter but couldn't catch up, thought Matt Hunter paced the Wolverines with 17 points.

Phoebus stays undefeated with 87-79 win against Kecoughtan; Warriors fall to 4-1

58277569
It was your typical Phoebus-Kecoughtan basketball game. Except, Phantoms coach James Daniel was happy to report, his team didn't have to play from behind in the fourth quarter.

Phoebus remained undefeated with an 87-79 win over the Warriors on Tuesday night. It was a back-and-forth game in which the Phantoms led by 12 late in the first quarter, trailed by 12 late in the second quarter, and led again by 13 late in the third.

Kecoughtan Boys Basketball beats Heritage 69-52, Girls lose a tough game 42-41

KECOUGHTAN 69, HERITAGE 52

Post player Rajay Bullock scored 22 to help Kecoughtan (4-0 Peninsula) defeat Heritage.

The Warriors led 40-22 at halftime and held on, though Devon Mayo scored 23 points for the winless Hurricanes.

Kecoughtan is now 4-0 for the season. The next game is at Phoebus on Tuesday, December 14 at 7:00PM

HERITAGE 42, KECOUGHTAN 41

Perhaps surprisingly, the host Warriors had a chance to upend Heritage (4-0) at the end.

But South Carolina State-bound post player Alanda Petes of Heritage blocked Brittany Townes' layup at the final buzzer, preserving the Hurricanes' victory.

Mache Toomer scored 13 points and Petes 11 for Heritage.

Townes led Kecoughtan with 11 points, and Kierra Gray provided 10 points and eight rebounds.
