Senior Night-Boys Soccer

The Kecoughtan Boys' Soccer team locked up the district title and will be taking on Warwick today at 6pm at Tromly Field. Tonight is Senior Night, so come out and support! We will also have a moment of silence to honor Mr. Donald Lindsay (passed away in December of 2009). He was Kecoughtan’s first boys soccer head coach and he was one of the forefathers for the Peninsula District inception (for all sports).

KHS 2, Princess Anne 2, -Boys Soccer

The Kecoughtan boys soccer team played Friday night vs. Princess Anne (another Beach District team) and it ended in a 2-2 tie. KHS scored 2 goals in the first 20 minutes (both by Max Wayman-Arnd4t), and the lights went out. There was a 15 minute delay until they came back on.

According to Coach Hughes, "It took the wind out of our sails and P.A. came back to tie it up just before half time. 2nd half so us step up the pressure and P.A. didn’t have any real dangerous chances. We created a few more chance with a couple that we should have buried, but overall….we had a good rhythm and played strongly as a team."

The game went into overtime and the lights went out again, and the game was called.

PD boys soccer preview: Menchville, Kecoughtan boosted by returnees

THE FAVORITES: Menchville (10-4-4, 7-0-2 in 2010), Kecoughtan (11-8-1, 7-2-0)

TOP RETURNING PLAYERS: F Paul Hem (Bethel), MF Anders Hasselquist (Kecoughtan), MF Justin Kaiser (Menchville), F Max Wayman-Arndt (Kecoughtan), MF Brian Keafer (Menchville), MF Darien Ruffin (Kecoughtan), MF Cody Weaver (Gloucester), MF Chris Cooke (Phoebus), D Austin Whipple (Kecoughtan), F Marcel Howard, Heritage.

OUTLOOK: The Monarchs are boosted by the return of Kaiser, who at one point last season scored hat tricks in four straight games. Losing All-PD G Brenden Avent will hurt, but Coach Dan Liebler has confidence in senior James Morgan. The Warriors return Hasselquist, whose 40-foot goal gave them a 1-0 win over Warwick in the PD semifinals and clinched a spot in the regionals. Weaver will help anchor the midfield for Gloucester (9-4-4, 5-2-2). Warwick (8-9-1, 7-2-0) is something of a question mark having lost two all-district players and breaking in a new coach in Michael Norton. Bethel (8-5-0, 6-3-0) returns Hem, an All-PD forward who had 12 goals in '10. Woodside (4-11-0, 2-7-0) will rely on captains Matt Mendonca and Zach Harris. Phoebus (5-8-0, 3-6-0) is under the direction of Ryan Pringle, its girls' coach the last six years. Heritage (0-12-1, 0-9-0) will count on F Marcel Howard, also the football team's kicker.

PD girls soccer preview: Menchville, Kecoughtan start at top

PENINSULA DISTRICT GIRLS SOCCER

THE FAVORITES: Menchville (10-6-2, 9-0-0 in 2010), Kecoughtan (10-8-1, 5-3-1).

TOP RETURNING PLAYERS: MF Leslie Coates (Denbigh), F Rachel Green (Woodside), D Alejandra Segura (Kecoughtan), F Mary Williams (Gloucester), F Lauren Cheatham (Denbigh), F Jamie Alcorday (Menchville), MF Sarah Watson (Woodside), MF Cassie Kuykendall (Menchville), D Brianna Norris (Gloucester), MF Claire Hunnicutt (Kecoughtan).

THE BUZZ: Last year, the Monarchs became the first PD team since 2004 to advance a round in the Eastern Regionals. Player of the Year Meredith McDowell is gone, but Menchville returns three second-team picks (Alcorday, Kuykendall, and defender Anna Webb). Segura, who has signed with VMI, makes the Warriors a threat to get back to the regionals. Kecoughtan won the district tournament as the No. 4 seed. Gloucester (11-6-1, 6-2-1) might be the district's youngest team with 18 players who are either freshmen or sophomores. With Coates, Denbigh (7-5-2, 6-1-2) returns one of the top players in the district. The Wolverines (6-4-4, 4-2-3) have Green, the PD's top goal scorer last year with 13. Bethel (1-9-0, 1-8-0) returns senior Chelsea Forehand at MF. Heritage (1-11-1, 0-8-1) has three-sport athlete Kayla Tann in the goal. Phoebus (3-9-1, 2-6-1) is hoping Caitlin Kremp's senior leadership helps get more wins. Warwick (5-6-1, 3-5-1) has 17 players who are juniors or seniors.

KHS 1, PHS 1- Boys Soccer 3/17

The Kecoughtan Boys Soccer team tied Poquoson 1-1 on Thursday. Poquoson scored within the first 10 minutes. Sophomore Josh Cherry scored KHS's lone goal with about 7 minutes left in the game with an assist from Cody Slezak. According to Coach Hughes, "We controlled most of the game and had many opportunities, but just couldn’t find the back of the net."

Next up, York High School at Kiln Creek for a 5:30pm game.

KHS 1, Great Bridge 3- Boys Soccer 3/16

The Kecoughtan Boys soccer team suffered another tough loss on Wednesday against Great Bridge 3-1. Injuries have hit the team hard this year and Coach Hughes hopes to have them back by district play. At the half, GBHS lead 2-0, and made it 3-0 ten minutes into the second half. With 7 minutes left to play, Garion Webb of KHS scored to make it 3-1.

Next up: Poquoson tonight, 5:30 at Poquoson Middle School

Kecoughtan 1, Cox 4-Boys Soccer

Kecoughtan lost their home opener 4-1 to Cox high school. According to coach Hughes, "In my opinion, I thought we played well and kept it competitive with the best team in the nation. Granted, they were missing two key starters in their lineup, but we were missing a couple key players of our own."

Kecoughtan scored after it was 4-0. Next up, Great Bridge tonite in the Christine Garvery Memorial tournament, 7:30PM at Poquoson Middle School.

LHS 2, KHS 0 -Boys Soccer 3/11 Scrimmage

The Kecoughtan Boys soccer team lost to Landstown in a scrimmage on Friday night 2-0. However, the score did not reflect the play on the field. Coach Hughes stated that, "This scrimmage could’ve gone either way. We made two mistakes in the back that lead to easy goals for them. We had a few opportunities on the attack, but as the score line shows, we failed to capitalize."

Next up on the schedule, nationally ranked Cox High School (defending state champs, back to back) at home on Tuesday, 4pm, at Kecoughtan High School’s Tromly Field. Cox finished up ranked no. 1 in the nation last season in the ESPN poll and no. 2 in the nation in the NSCAA (coaches poll). They were the first team in VHSL history to go 25-0 last season. Come out and support!

Varsity Boys Soccer wins scrimmage against Kempsville 1-0

The Varsity Boys Soccer team beat Kempsville in a scrimmage Wednesday 1-0. Scrimmages do not count towards the regular season, but Coach Hughes believes, "even though it's a scrimmage, beating a beach opponent is always a plus." TOnight they play Landstown in another scrimmage. Best of luck to the Boys' Soccer team this year!
